Washington, D.C. – Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) voted to support the End the Border Catastrophe Act, legislation that would enable the United States to regain operational control of the southern border. LaHood previously voted to impeach the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and voted in support of H.R. 2 the Secure the Border Act, the strongest border security measure in a generation.
Following his vote, Rep. LaHood released the below statement:
"As a former federal prosecutor, I spent time prosecuting immigration cases and returning illegal immigrants who violated the law back to their country of origin. The national security and humanitarian crisis at our southern border is a direct result of President Biden's failed policies and refusal to enforce the law. Every community has become a border town because of Biden's failures, including in Illinois where resources are strained and radical sanctuary city and soft on crime policies have hamstrung our police force.
"On day one of his presidency, Joe Biden sent a message to the world that our borders are open by rescinding the Trump Administration's Remain in Mexico policy. The End the Border Catastrophe Act will reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy, end catch-and-release policies, resume construction of the border wall, and increase hiring of Border Patrol agents. House Republicans have consistently acted to secure the border and end the humanitarian and security crisis reaching into every community. It's past time that the Biden Administrations enforce the law and protect our country."
Background on the End the Border Catastrophe Act:
- Forces the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall.
- Ends catch and release.
- Ends abuse of parole.
- Implements Remain in Mexico.
- Deploys technology to the southern and northern border.
- Increases the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay.
- Requires transparency regarding illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security.
