PEORIA, IL— Rep. Darin LaHood (IL-18) hosted an awards ceremony this evening for the participants of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition at the Peoria Downtown Public Library and recognized six local artists as well-deserving award recipients. The Congressional Art Competition is an annual opportunity to showcase artistic high-schoolers in Illinois’ 18th Congressional District. Participants were judged anonymously by a select, volunteer panel. Award winners were selected by a cumulative vote.
“This year, a record number of art pieces were entered for our Congressional Art Competition, once again showcasing the incredible talent from across central and west-central Illinois. From the 157 art pieces submitted, from more than 110 students, I continue to be impressed with the art education being taught across the 18th District. What makes this competition so special is that it provides the opportunity to recognize the remarkable talents of our young people,” stated Rep. LaHood. “Congratulations to all of our award recipients this year, particularly to our first-place winner Savannah Stowe, whose piece ‘Sunflower’ will be displayed in the halls of our nation’s Capitol Building in Washington D.C.”
The individuals who received awards are as follows:
- 1st place (to be hung in the Capitol and invited to travel to Washington, DC for the National Art Reception in June) “Sunflower” by Savannah Stowe, Henry-Senachwine High School
- 2nd place (to be hung in Rep. LaHood’s DC office): Olivia Skinner, Dunlap High School
- Honorable mentions (to be hung in Rep. LaHood’s District offices)
- “Nate” by Nathan Sporrer, Washington Community High School
- “King of the Past” by Jordan Tomlianovich from Peoria Notre Dame High School
- “Mountain Patience” by Adelle Baker from Tremont High School
- “Hypothetical” by Quinn Fabish from Washington Community High School
