Washington, D.C. – Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16), a member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), introduced the Strategy to Oppose Purposeful CCP Aggression at the United Nations (STOP CCP at UN) Act of 2023. The legislation would curb the Peoples’ Republic of China's (PRC) increasing influence at the UN and other multinational organizations, which threatens U.S. diplomatic engagement and global security.
"The Chinese Communist Party continues to exert undue influence at the United Nations, within other multinational organizations, and in developing countries around the globe," said Rep. LaHood. "The United States should not be on the sidelines while the CCP expands their influence through aggression and pressure at the UN and elsewhere. As Congress works to increase American competitiveness in relation to the CCP, this important bill will better equip the US to counter the CCP and strengthen our diplomatic leadership at the UN and throughout the world."
“For too long, the CCP has weaponized and exploited international bodies, including at the UN, to spread its malign influence to the detriment of the United States, our allies, and the values these international organizations purport to champion. The STOP CCP at UN Act is an important step to begin to push back against the CCP’s coercive and corrupting tactics in these bodies," said Rep. Mike Gallagher, Chairman of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP.
The STOP CCP at UN Act would establish an Office of Multilateral Strategy at the Department of State to develop and implement a strategy to counter the CCP at the UN and other multinational organizations and grow US influence. Additionally, the bill requires the Secretary of State and the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations to issue an annual report on the CCP's efforts to place PRC officials in leadership positions at the UN.
