Washington, D.C. – Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) was reappointed as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare for the 119th Congress. Congressman LaHood will also continue to serve on the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade.
“It is an honor to serve as the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare for the 119th Congress,” said Rep. LaHood. “Our subcommittee focuses on supporting some of the most vulnerable in society. I am dedicated to improving and strengthening child and family care while protecting United States taxpayer dollars. I look forward to working alongside Chairman Jason Smith, Subcommittee Ranking Member Danny Davis, and the rest of our colleagues to build on our bipartisan work last Congress and continue to pass critical pieces of legislation to help all Americans."
“Under Chairman LaHood, we enacted a first-in-a-generation reauthorization and modernization of our child welfare programs – helping to ensure vulnerable families and children have the resources they need to succeed,” said House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith. “We held the first ever U.S. House standing committee hearing in a homeless shelter to focus attention on policies that will lift more Americans out of poverty. In the days to come, we will advance reforms that improve the lives of millions of Americans, weed out fraud in our unemployment insurance program, and promote the dignity of work."
This is Congressman LaHood’s second consecutive Congress serving as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare. While serving as Subcommittee Chairman last Congress, Congressman LaHood oversaw a first-in-a-generation bipartisan reauthorization and reform of child welfare programs under Title IV-B of the Social Security Act signed into law. Congressman LaHood also held a field hearing in Chicago with Chairman Jason Smith and Subcommittee Ranking Member Danny Davis, entitled, “The Dignity of Work: Lifting Individuals Out of Poverty.”
The Subcommittee on Work and Welfare handles matters related to the Social Security Act, including temporary assistance for needy families, childcare, child and family services, child support, foster care, adoption, supplemental security income, social services, eligibility of welfare recipients for food stamps, and low-income energy assistance.
The Subcommittee on Work and Welfare also introduces bills and matters referred to the House Ways and Means Committee that related to federal-state system of unemployment compensation, and the financing for extended and emergency benefits.
