WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Rep. Darin LaHood voted in support of H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017, a measure that he cosponsored to permanently prohibit taxpayer dollars from directly funding abortions by expanding the Hyde Amendment.
During the debate over the measure on the House Floor, Rep. LaHood stated, “57 million innocent lives have been lost to abortion since 1973. Even more disheartening, taxpayer dollars are currently funding them, despite the fact that polls show that 60% of Americans believe that abortions should not be directly paid for with these dollars. I am proud to cosponsor and vote for this measure to permanently prevent taxpayer dollars from being spent on aborting unborn children. It’s time to make this life-saving amendment permanent and government-wide. If signed by the President, this measure would do just that.”
The Hyde Amendment currently prohibits funds allocated through the annual Labor and Health & Human Services Appropriations bills from directly funding abortions. H.R. 7 expands the Hyde Amendment to protect funds government-wide and makes the amendment permanent. It is estimated that the Hyde Amendment has saved two million lives since it first was enacted in 1976.?
