"Serving on the Ways and Means Committee provides an important voice for the 18th District of Illinois in Washington on issues like trade, tax, health care, and social security. In our region, free and fair trade and sound tax policy are economic drivers for farmers, manufacturers, small businesses, and workers. On these key subcommittees, I intend to provide central and west-central Illinois with an important seat at the table to help shape policy on kitchen table issues that benefit our hard-working communities. Over the next two years, I look forward to continuing work under Ways and Means Republican Leader Kevin Brady to move our country forward, advocate for pro-growth policies that expand trade markets, and drive economic prosperity throughout America."

Congressman Darin LaHood was appointed to the House Ways and Means Committee in January of 2018. This will be his second full term serving on the House Ways and Means Committee.

The Ways and Means Committee is the oldest committee of the United States Congress, and is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. The Committee derives a large share of its jurisdiction from Article I, Section VII of the U.S. Constitution which declares, “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." The committee exercises jurisdiction over revenue and related issues such as tariffs, reciprocal trade agreements, and the bonded debt of the United States. It also holds jurisdiction over revenue-related aspects of the Social Security system, Medicare, and social services programs.
