WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Darin LaHood (IL-18) and Rodney Davis (IL-13) today announced that the City of Springfield has received a $10,000,000 federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The grant is for the next phase of the Springfield Rail Improvement Project. Supportive actions by LaHood and Davis include visiting the site numerous times to meet with stakeholders and advocating to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao for the project.
This phase of the project will build upon years of planning, design, and construction along Springfield's rail corridor that is critical to both the movement of passengers and freight. This funding will provide the resources necessary to construct new double-track rail bridges at Cook Street and South Grand Avenue. Additionally, this funding would help complete the grading and track work between those bridges.
"Today's announcement is extraordinary news for Springfield and is another important step towards completing the Springfield Rail Improvements Project," said LaHood. "This award will help create jobs, provide more efficient transportation, improve traffic flow, and allow better connectivity to Springfield's medical district. Since joining Congress, I have been a strong supporter of this project along with Congressman Rodney Davis. I want to thank U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and the Trump Administration for this important investment in Springfield infrastructure."
