PEORIA, IL—Congressmen Darin LaHood (IL-18) and Rodney Davis (IL-13) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $5,646,922 in Community Development Block Grants, Emergency Solutions Grants, and HOME grants for central Illinois communities. Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, and Springfield are all recipients of funding.
“The funding awarded through these programs provides critical support for individuals working to regain stability and housing for middle and low-income families in need," said Rep. LaHood. “With this funding, entities like Habitat for Humanity are able to provide safe and affordable housing to those in need in our community. I applaud Secretary Ben Carson and the Trump Administration for their efforts to support our communities and I’ll continue to work with them and my colleagues to help lift folks out of poverty and provide stability to those that need it most”
“Access to affordable housing can fundamentally change a person’s life and is often the start to lifting many out of poverty,” said Rep. Davis. “I’m proud to support these grants and work with the administration to provide flexible funding that allows our local communities to address their specific housing needs.”
Background
The Community Development Block (CDBG) Grants program provides annual grants to States and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
The Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program provides annual grants to State, local, and private entities to assist people in quickly regaining stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis and/or homelessness. In addition to rapid re-housing and homelessness prevention, the ESG program also provides limited funding for street outreach as well as for improving the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.
The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to States and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.
