WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL) today released the following statement after the United States Senate acquitted President Donald Trump on both articles of impeachment.
“I applaud the Senate for acting swiftly to acquit President Trump on the weakest and most partisan impeachment charges in our nation’s history. As I’ve said throughout this process, impeachment is the nuclear option, reserved for the most treasonous activity, and House Democrats failed to present evidence that supported the high threshold and requirements needed for removal.
“American democracy is premised on the power being with the people. Not with partisan members of Congress. With the 2020 primaries underway and early voting in Illinois starting in seven months for the 2020 presidential election, the American voters will have an immediate opportunity to render a judgment.
“It’s time to move on. For three years, Democrats obsessed over the results of the 2016 election, wasting taxpayer money and time in their efforts to impeach and remove President Trump. There are plenty of issues for Congress to tackle, including infrastructure, prescription drug costs, workforce development, and growing our strong economy. I hope we can finally move on and focus on the issues voters sent us to Washington to fix.”
