Washington D.C. – President Donald Trump today signed into law the Taxpayer First Act, which includes Congressman Darin LaHood’s bill, the Improving Assistance for Taxpayers Act.
“Everyday, my office works with constituents who are having issues dealing with the IRS. With President Trump’s signature today, we are taking a major step to reform the IRS to be a more effective organization for American taxpayers,” stated Rep. LaHood. “I am proud that legislation I introduced was included in this important reform and am encouraged by the bipartisan work of my Ways and Means Committee colleagues to make systemic and much-needed changes at the IRS. When people file their taxes, they should have confidence that their return will be processed fairly and that their information will be protected, the Taxpayer First Act will help ensure the taxpayers, not a federal agency, is prioritized.”

The Taxpayer First Act
The Taxpayer First Act is the largest reform of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in over twenty years and takes important steps to make the IRS a more efficient and accountable agency. The Taxpayer First Act includes legislation introduced by Rep. LaHood, H.R. 1825, the Improving Assistance for Taxpayers Act, which will address systemic issues within the IRS and expand protections for taxpayers by instructing the IRS to respond promptly to Taxpayer Assistance Directives (TAD) issued by the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). It will codify that the IRS is required to issue a detailed response to TADs ordered by the Taxpayer Advocate within 90 days. To further increase transparency, the Taxpayer Advocate will be required to report to Congress when the IRS does not respond to TADs.
