Congressman Darin LaHood made a stop in Macomb Tuesday afternoon to discuss issues with community leaders at rotary club.
LaHood discussed topics including the future of Western Illinois University, the importance of Amtrak and how to fund it, along with agriculture and the importance of getting rid of tariffs.
“I’m optimistic that the president can continue to hold China accountable, reach an agreement sooner or later,” LaHood said. “I’m hopeful in the next 60 to 90 days, they’ll reach an agreement, sign that, and that will be part of a purchase agreement to purchase more corn and soybeans, which is good for central, west central Illinois.”
LaHood also discussed the concern of high gas prices.
“We are now energy independent in this country, first time that that’s happened in a long time,” LaHood said. “Plus, we have allies like Saudi Arabia, and others in the middle east that can produce more oil, so I think the risk of putting further sanctions on Iran, is worth it because we have to continue to hold Iran in check.”
LaHood also stressed he hopes in the next two to three months, a deal can be reached to ease the tariffs and trade war with China that has had an impact on local farmers.
