WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives voted to approve the conference report for the Energy and Water, Legislative Branch, and Military Construction & Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act for 2019. This legislation included $9 million, previously authorized in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 182nd Airlift Wing’s firehouse project. The funding was appropriated after Congressman Darin LaHood successfully included language in this year’s military construction appropriations bill.
The 182nd Airlift Wing’s funding will allow for a new firehouse to be constructed at the base, which provides services for the entirety of the Peoria International Airport. The appropriations agreement now heads to President Trump’s desk for approval.
“Not only does this bill take another great step towards returning our budget to the regular order and on time process, but this legislation also secures $9 million in funding for our 182nd Airlift Wing and the construction of a new firehouse,” stated Rep. LaHood. “This new firehouse at the 182nd Airlift Wing is vital to the safety of the larger Peoria International Airport, which they also serve. I was proud to work on behalf of our brave Airmen to ensure they have the proper resources to effectively serve our community and provide exceptional service as one of the top units in the nation.”
The 182nd has been working to secure this funding over the last several years. While the Guard has worked tirelessly to provide service to the Peoria Airport and serve in its existing facility, improvements are needed. The fire station was built in 1992 to support F-16 operations with four apparatus, staffed by 12 airmen for 8-12 hours per day. The station has quickly become outdated for its current mission and overall Guard needs as it now supports C-130 Hercules aircraft, Ch-47 Chinooks, and Peoria International Airport operations 24/7/365 with 64 airmen and 14 apparatus. The construction of a new facility will allow for the storage of all fire service equipment, safer air quality and separate sleeping facilities for those who serve at the fire station.
