WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House Republican Steering Committee, Chaired by Speaker Paul Ryan, selected Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL) to serve on the House Ways & Means Committee. The appointment came after Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH) announced his pending resignation from Congress late last year. The Committee on Ways and Means is the oldest committee in Congress and is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. The Committee has jurisdiction over all taxation, trade and tariffs, and other revenue-raising measures. The appointment will be confirmed by the full House Republican Conference in the coming days.

“I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to serve on the Ways & Means Committee,” LaHood stated. “With this position, I will continue advocating for central & west-central Illinois on many issues important to the 18th District and my constituents, including tax policy, making health care more accessible and affordable, free & fair trade, and protecting entitlement programs for current and future seniors.

“The 18th District is a critical region where manufacturing, agriculture, and trade all intersect and I’m grateful the hard-working constituents I represent will have a voice on these critical issues. I am anxious to get to work with Chairman Brady and my colleagues on many of these issues on behalf of the American people.”

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady added, “I’m excited to welcome Congressman LaHood to our Committee. Since coming to Congress, Darin has been a champion for pro-growth policies that create more jobs and increase paychecks for hardworking families in Illinois and across the country. As a former federal and state prosecutor, Darin will bring an important new perspective to our Committee’s work. As workers, families, and job creators continue to see and feel the benefits of their new tax code, I look forward to having Darin on our team to continue taking action on policies that will improve lives.”

The Committee on Ways and Means has six subcommittees pertaining to issues in health, human resources, oversight, tax policy, social security, and trade. The Committee derives a large share of its jurisdiction from Article I, Section VII of the U.S. Constitution which declares, “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.

With this appointment, Congressman LaHood will step down from his current committee appointments on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
