SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) — Congressman Darin LaHood tackling the issues of heroin and opioid use in central Illinois.

Wednesday, LaHood hosted a round table discussion with local law enforcement and residents in Springfield to look at the direct impact these drugs have in his district.

Discussion included what resources are needed to combat drug use and why heroin use is a much bigger issue now than in the past.

"The kind of potency and addictive nature of opiates, whether that's Percocet, whether that's Vicodin, or a number of other ones we heard today, and heroin, we're dealing with an addiction level and a potency that's much higher than other drugs -- and that requires more resources," said Rep. Darin LaHood, (R) Peoria.

LaHood also spoke about how drug courts can be effective in treating drug users, if they have the resources needed to run them.
