PEORIA, IL—Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-18) announced today that he will now serve as co-chair of the U.S.-China Working Group (USCWG) alongside of Congressmen Rick Larsen (WA-2). Founded in 2005 and composed of members of Congress, this bi-partisan group seeks to build and strengthen diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China.
“I am thankful for this leadership opportunity to strengthen the working relationship between China and America. While our two countries do not always see eye-to-eye, I hope we can continue to work together to address our respective concerns for the betterment of our countries and our citizens. As the United States' third largest export market and biggest source of imports, China is the second largest overall U.S. trading partner. Over time our economies, and our welfare, have become inevitably intertwined. I believe this forum of frank discussions between our two counties will facilitate increased cooperation,” stated Rep. LaHood.
Caterpillar, one of Central Illinois’ largest businesses, articulated the importance of the USCWG to the economy of the 18th district. “Caterpillar thanks Congressman LaHood for his leadership on issues impacting our business and our employees in Central Illinois. The U.S.-China Working Group frequently collaborates with key business, academic and political leaders about U.S.-China issues ranging from trade and economic policy to space exploration and military-to-military cooperation. As co-chair, Rep. LaHood will work closely with the State Department, congressional leadership, the academic community and key business leaders to define and execute American-Sino diplomatic strategy.
