WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Darin LaHood released the following statement today in response to President Obama’s address proposing executive order against gun owners:
“As a former state and federal prosecutor, I support targeting resources to enforce and prosecute individuals who violate our already established gun laws, as well as assist in providing for our nation’s growing mental health needs. However, I also believe that we need to protect and preserve the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens. Today, we saw the President laud his own gun control agenda as if it was a major piece of legislation that was debated, voted upon and signed into law - unfortunately, he is missing the fact that our elected constitutional democracy requires a full and transparent vetting of these proposals through a legislative process. Any elected official, whether democrat or republican, should have concerns about executive overreach that dismisses the legislative body. It is yet another example of the President sidestepping the Legislative Branch to expedite his policies, of which Congress and the American people have repeatedly disagreed with.”
