Rep. Darin LaHood Presents Carnegie Medal to James Vernon
Rep. Darin LaHood presented Mr. James Vernon of Morton with the Carnegie Medal for his heroic actions in October of 2015 when he stopped an armed assailant who entered the Morton Library with the intent to harm 17 children and four women. Thanks to James' quick action and leadership in such a dangerous situation, he undoubtedly saved lives and the community is grateful for his courage and service to his community. The Carnegie Medal is given throughout the United States and Canada to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others. Since 1904, only 9,971 medals have been awarded from more than 89,000 nominees.

Congressman Darin LaHood announced the commencement of the Veterans History Project for Illinois’ 18th Congressional District. The project is a way to collect and preserve memories, stories, interviews, and memorabilia of the United States veterans from WWII to the present. As an initiative by the Library of Congress, the project gives veterans the opportunity to share personal experiences that will be catalogued by the Library as a way to honor the impact and history of the armed forces.
Rep. LaHood Honors Fallen Army Ranger
Congressman Darin LaHood introduces legislation honoring fallen Army Ranger and Bloomington native Sergeant Joshua Rodgers. On April 27, 2017, U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua P. Rodgers was killed in action supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan. The Bloomington native was 22 years old.

I had the opportunity to congratulate the Quincy Air Evac Lifeteam for 20 years of service to the surrounding community. As part of my visit, I presented the team with a copy of my submission to the Congressional Record congratulating them on their latest milestone. I extend my sincere congratulations to the Quincy Air Evac Lifeteam on twenty years of service and I wish them continued safety as they protect to the Quincy community.
Pinning a Purple Heart
Rep. Darin LaHood presented Anthony Smith with a Purple Heart during a ceremony in Warsaw on October 17, 2017. Anthony served in the 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor. Even though he was awarded the Purple Heart as well, he did not receive a physical medal until this ceremony.
